It all starts because of greed not in blood. No person or no society is born corrupt, but it becomes so because of the unmet desires and unfilled dreams, and above all, the lack of means to achieve them monetarily. With the economic growth and advancements in the standards of living, not all have been able to stay tuned with them. There has been a tremendous pressure on the breadwinner to meet the demands of the family and society. The mismatch in the earnings and the expenditures has made people to grow more corrupt; while those in the jobs with lower government salaries and least supervised working conditions have become the pest to eat the society. The politicians have been blemished often by remarks of being corrupt and arrogant. The anger, resentment against the devil of corruption had pent-up and vented by means of hunger-strike by social activists like Anna Hazare.
It is very necessary to understand who is actually responsible for this? Is it the citizens of this country who can do anything about it or the government? We can easily say that we, the people of India, should wake up and do everything to curb it, but is it possible? With such a wide gamut of human diversity in terms of thinking, morals and devotion towards society, we can’t expect everybody to move in a single file and answer to the call of the hour. Just as all the fingers are unequal so are human interventions in the matters concerning society and nation. People are ready to suffer, crib but only a few are brave enough to voice against it.
We expect citizens to change at the bottom of the pyramid. If I ask you to wait for sometime longer for your work since the other person is lackadaisical to do it. You are in haste, hence you succumb to the situation and give away easily. Suppose we are not ready to wear helmet and upon being caught by the police, we simply try to bribe him. Now if in case the police start taking the bribes regularly, we call them corrupt. It is us who have actually laid the seeds of corruption by being corrupt within ourselves. Let us consider an example to understand the multitude complexity of the system. Suppose there’s a doctor who needs an approval from a government employee but the employee is asking for money to do it fast but the doctor relents and is ready to wait. Now one day that employee is sick and goes to the same doctor, but since the queue is long, he tries talking to doctor and offers him the favour to give his approval soon if he treats him on priority. The deal is set since doctor feels he doesn’t have to give money for his work. Can we identify the real culprit? Who can we say is corrupt in this catch 22 situation? In this case it is the relative degree of corruptness which differs. Since we live in this society and deal with infected society, we have to make compromises.
The system is corrupt and you alone cannot do anything magnanimous. To expect a gargantuan population of around 160 crores to change of their own and be fair is something near to impossible. We need to have a sound, robust and effective law in place which can govern the people in their dealings. It is the duty of the people in power to bring justice to the society since they represent the true requirements of the citizens. They must take necessary steps to build fool-proof and best legislative framework which helps to control this issue by imposing toughest punishments to the culprits. However be large the magnitude of the awareness camp for the people, we can’t assume it to bring a major change in the system but a small yet stringent law can bring drastic results provided the implementers are able and devoted. This is a weak link which has always prevented our society to evolve, but still we can charge them for their sin. Links can always be reinforced but it needs a will of the policy-framers. Government needs to control hoardings, unnecessary hikes in prices, provide more jobs and a sense of security to the minds of people.
The day government takes a vow to give an ablution to the society with its undeterred will to make it corruption-free, it will embark this civilization towards a better and more productive society to lead the world. A bunch of few Anna Hazares at the helm of the country are enough as compared to thousands on the roads fasting to achieve the goal.
